Dialysis Technician
Focus:          Direct patient care
Reports To:   Dialysis RN
  1. High School graduate or equivalent
  2. Previous patient care experience
  3. CCHT or Bonent Certification Required
Performs the procedure of dialysis under the supervision of a qualified dialysis nurse.  The patient care procedure includes cannulation or catheter care, treatment initiation, and monitoring, and treatment termination.  The technician is responsible for ancillary duties of setting up for procedures, clean up, quality control tasks, and other duties/projects as assigned.
Job requires walking, standing for long periods, stooping, and bending.  Must be able to do light lifting of at least 25#.  Requires physical assistance with patient transfers.  Requires close mental, visual, and auditory attention to patient.  Work environment is characteristic of a health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels.  May be exposed to infectious and contagious disease/materials.
  • Provides excellent customer service as it applies to all external and internal customers including patients, staff and physicians
  • Takes initiative and action to respond, resolve and follow up regarding customer service issues with all customers in a timely manner
  • Follows all policies and procedures
  • Conducts water room and chloramines testing/ protocol a assigned
  • Collects and reports water cultures per schedule as assigned
  • Mixing and preparation of bicarbonate and special baths
  • Preparation of cleaning solutions/protocol
  • Works at no more than 4:1 patient ratio as assigned
  • Initiation, monitoring, and discontinuation of hemodialysis treatments
  • Documents all dialysis treatment parameters and patient monitoring vitals o n appropriate flow sheet
  • Reports any untoward assessment findings to RN prior to initiation of treatment
  • Assesses patient dry weight and sets dialysis machine for appropriate fluid removal
  • Explains procedure of dialysis to patients/family
  • Assists RN/LPN with procedures as needed
  • Contributes to the patient care plan collaboratively with the RN
  • Initiates and participates in multidisciplinary care conferences as needed
  • Notes, signs and implements Physician Orders accurately and timely
  • Organizes and prioritizes work to utilize resources wisely, and complete assignments timely minimizing overtime
  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes to work volume, acuity, staffing and scheduling
  • Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement process
  • Participates in orientation and development of new personnel.
  • Demonstrates leadership and sensitivity toward co-workers by assisting as necessary and sharing skills and experience in a team environment
  • Demonstrates respect of individual and cultural, beliefs, and lifestyle of patients/family members, and co-workers
  • Promotes positive morale
  • Addresses systems problems/concerns with practical solutions
  • Provides for patient safety needs as indicated by identified risk factors. Uses age specific considerations as appropriate
  • Practices good body mechanics and correct methods of moving, lifting, and transporting patients.
  • Assures that equipment is functioning properly prior to and during patient use.  Reports malfunctions appropriately
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment
  • Adheres to all infection/safety control measures
  • Initiates emergency protocols
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of potential hazards
