1. Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
2. Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois
3. Previous dialysis experience and/or Nephrology Certification 

  • Assures responsibility for the unit and works collaboratively with members of the multidisciplinary team.  
  • Prescribes, coordinates and delivers care through the nursing process to adult chronic dialysis patients utilizing standards of care set by the American Nephrology Nurse Association.  
  • Works to ensure the attainment of patient outcomes that meet KDOQI goal, in an environment regulated by the State of Illinois.
  • Supervises care given by dialysis technicians while assuming a ‘hands on’ role and fostering a team approach to patient care.

  • Provides excellent customer service as it applies to all external and internal customers including patients, staff and physicians
  • Takes initiative and action to respond, resolve and follow up regarding customer service issues with all customers in a timely manner
  • Follows all policies and procedures
  • Accurately evaluates skills and knowledge of unit personnel and delegates assignments appropriately.  
  • Oversees daily operations of the dialysis unit, scheduling personnel not to exceed 4:1 patient ratio
  • RN assumes the care of the most critical patients
  • Assesses and documents patient condition pre and post dialysis treatment
  • Completes admission database.  
  • Utilize assessment information, patient learning needs and age appropriate considerations to develop and/or contribute to a plan of care that will reduce complications and promote health.
  • Develops assessment care plans with patient and/or family input 
  • Evaluates patient/significant other responsiveness to interventions, documents, and implements changes to plan collaborating with other disciplines as needed
  • Provides education for patient/family based on assessment of learning needs.  
  • Explains procedures and medications to patient/family as appropriate
  • Initiates and participates in multidisciplinary care conferences as needed
  • Administers all dialysis related medications during treatment 
  • Documents daily treatment and medication charges
  • Reviews lab results timely and notifies physician of critical data
  • Notes, signs and implements Physician Orders accurately and timely
  • Organizes and prioritizes work to utilize resources wisely, and complete assignments timely minimizing overtime
  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes to work volume, acuity, staffing and scheduling
  • Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement process
  • Assists with the development of departmental policies and procedures
  • Participates in orientation and development of new personnel.
  • Demonstrates leadership and sensitivity toward co-workers by assisting as necessary and sharing skills and experience in a team environment
  • Demonstrates respect of individual and cultural, beliefs, and lifestyle of patients/family members, and co-workers
  • Promotes positive morale
  • Addresses systems problems/concerns with practical solutions
  • Provides for patient safety needs as indicated by identified risk factors.
  • Uses age specific considerations as appropriate
  • Practices good body mechanics and correct methods of moving, lifting, and transporting 
  • Assures that equipment is functioning properly prior to and during patient use.  
  • Reports malfunctions appropriately
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment
  • Adheres to all infection/safety control measures
  • Initiates emergency protocols
  • Notifies supervisor or designee of potential hazards
